Beaches and ‘Liming’ in Grenada
Grenada’s best beaches and whitest sand are to be found in the sheltered south-west and are protected from the Atlantic swell by the island itself. Grand Anse is the most famous and best loved beach on the island by locals and visitors alike. It is a fantastic two mile strip of bright white sand and looks out onto the clear water of the Bay and St George’s with the mountains and rain forest in the background. Some of the other much quieter and less busy are BBC Beach, Groom’s Beach, Magazine Beach, L’Anse aux Epines and La Sagesse.

Diving in Grenada

The scuba diving in Grenada is mainly off the south-western peninsular of the island, where the reefs lie in the lee of the island, in particular off Grand Anse and up the calmer western coastline. There are some wrecks and drift dives and some nice reefs with corals with a good variety of fish and other underwater life. The most famous wreck in Grenada is the Bianca C, a 600ft cruise ship that was destroyed by fire in St George’s harbour in the 1960s and then taken out to sea and sunk next to Whibbles Reef. There are numerous dive companies on Grenada and all offer scuba training from introduction upwards, including speciality courses

Flora and Gardens in Grenada
The ‘Spice Isle’ is covered with a mantle of green, from its sea level mangroves, up through pastures and plantation and dry Caribbean forest, to mountainous, rain forested heights. The island has a fantastic array of tropical plants, from the orange-red immortelle trees that shade the cocoa trees to cultivated orchids in specialist collections. And the island is particularly fertile for certain types of plant, notably herbs and certain tropical spices.

Grenadians use their fertile volcanic soil to create superb gardens and the Grenadian team has been successful over the years at winning numerous gold and silver medals at the Chelsea Flower Show in London. There are many tropical gardens that are open to the public in particular Sunnyside, Bay Gardens, The Tower and Balthazar Estate.
